Sans-Abri is a painting of a man asleep on a door step in a very affluent area of Paris. His skin is deeply bronzed by the summer sun and his clothes dirty and in shreds. He rests his head on his bag of possessions and his body on his true belonging, the stone of the streets he calls home. Like all my work, the vision of this man was as a painting. The method was deliberately looser than my usual style as the subject was not as clean, crisp or legible, and clearly has a lifestyle escaping governmental rules. The image is painted onto diagonally stitched canvas, symbolic of the division of lifestyles in all towns and cities world wide, his tattered clothing, and perhaps his disjointed life. The latter can only be surmised. It is possible this man is habitually happy. It is Paris afterall!
