You succeeded on the conveying of character front - they do have tremendous character, and considerable intelligence; my aunt had to rear one that had been abandoned by its mother (she was a zookeeper's wife - my aunt, obviously; not the chimp's mother; I thought I ought to make that quite clear... I mean, animal husbandry is one thing, but..... I digress); the critter (one Timothy) displayed significantly more intelligence and awareness than a human baby of the same age; things do go down hill a bit in slightly later life, although even that's arguable, but we are much, much closer to the apes than we ever like to admit... I hope we'll grasp that before we render the majority of them extinct.
