Hello Gary, I want to apologize. I didn't know there was more than one Gary on the gallery. I thaught you had more than one portfolio, so sorry! By the way: your otter is so cute and the rest of your gallery is very beautiful, I particulary like the "Moonlight" painting!

Children can be cruel..... I see what she means though; I like the head and shoulders - the rear end does take a bit of explaining, as you say.... Still - here's the trouble with working with photographs that don't give you enough information (and they hardly ever do): a sketch or two would have helped as well as the photo: but I know, I know - you're standing there in public, get your sketchbook out, and immediately an unsympathetic public is peering over your shoulder: they might make comments or they might not, but you feel you know what they're thinking.... We all have to get over that, and scribble away regardless. A small sketchpad, A5 size maybe, a sharp F grade pencil, and the marks will be faint enough to be hard to see by anyone peeping at you, but strong enough for you to read them when you get safely home; and you can just slip the book in your pocket. I recommend this... don't always remember to take it with me, but recommend it....

Pastel on Ingres paper A3. Having had comment on this one from my most ardent admirer and biggest critic (daughter age 7) I think I need to explain the pose. My daughter said "Dad, why does your otter have a wizard's hat on?" when she saw this and I can understand why! It is from a photo I took at a wildlife centre in Derbyshire and I was looking down on the otter which was half standing with its paws on the vertical wall of the enclosure and its tail flat on the ground. My daughter's suggestion to put stars on the tail to make it look even more like a wizard's hat was not taken up!
