Alderney, Coast to Coast

Alderney, Coast to Coast
Comments

I've never been to Alderney so can't comment on the accuracy of your painting, but experimentation is the lifeblood of art, so I applaud you for having a go. I think I'd like to see more variation in tone - a bit more light and shade (which you've achieved in some of your other paintings). Chiaroscuro is, I think, the term! Get a bit more light into it ... The figures look rather too large in relation to the landscape to my eye - but then: what do I know, to be honest? I'm told Alderney is a landscape in miniature, so maybe you've got it right; can only comment on how it seems to me. The painting is interesting and makes me want to know more about the area -- which I think is always half the battle. Have you, maybe, tried to cram too much in to one painting? It's hard to judge ... I'm going to have to go to Alderney and take a look for myself - well done for posing these questions!

Acrylic on wood, 80x28cm. This is based on a series of photos I took from Fort Albert in Alderney in summer 2009. From this point I could see the sea on both sides of the island and the town of St Anne and the beach at Braye far right. I have made some changes to the scene. In the foreground of the photo there are the remains of a Victorian gun emplacement, whilst this is typical of the island it didn't do much for the painting. I have replaced this with the wild flowers that are widespread on Alderney in the springtime. This pianting is a bit experimental for me as I have used a palette knife for texture in the foreground and put in figures. Practise needed on both of these I think!
