Thank You Elizabeth - re perspective it is a good idea to practice very basic 2D perspective drawing. You can find very simple examples on line nowadays and I use this to teach to my students when we are working on beginner's drawing classes. The idea is to look the room you are in and to end up drawing it out with the facing wall at a 90deg angle and then drawing in some basic things like carpets, paintings or windows. A tip is always to remember that anything over the horizon line and vanishing point is going up to the top of your book and those below go to the bottom of your book. There is also the idea of foreshortening which you can measure by using your pencil to compare the distance (always at 90deg so that you can get the size right.)
