Gosh! It was only when I checked the date on this sketch that I realised how far back my sketch books go. This is old! 2001! And what a memorable day it turned out to be. The Chateau is symmetrical - I only managaged to capture half of it - there is another wing to the right which doesn't appear on my sketch. The building is surrounded by a moat and approached via a bridge. I'd started to draw when over the bridge road a guy on a bike. He stopped, looked and said that he was going for a spot of lunch, he'd be back in an hour and if I wanted to look round the interior, just wait where I was until he came back. I had a full tour of the ground floor - magnificent rooms. Library, drawing rooms , foyer etc. And I got a full commentary from the man on the bike, who turned out to be the owner. He gave me the history of the chateau when it was the local HQ for the German Army of Occupation during the war. He showed me damage done, not by the Germans but by the Resista
