You have certainly captured the essence of England in the summer.

This is beautiful David. You have captured the colours and light beautifully.

Two super paintings David.

Love it, David, so very English a scene!

A perfect watercolour in every way David. Beautiful choice of colours.

Glorious David!

You know how to confidently apply the paint and then leave it alone! Lovely fresh, clean work

Thank you all for those appreciative responses. It makes outdoor painting worthwhile when I'm told the result evokes the feel, as well as the look, of the scene. With comments like yours, I'm encouraged to go out again and brave the heat, the flies, the sunstroke and dehydration. Soon enough I'll be facing pneumonia and trench foot again, I'm sure. But I still recommend outdoor painting as the most satisfying!

Must have missed this one David, for me it has it all good composition, well balanced, superb background, lovely mark making and your tones are spot on, great painting.

I'm honoured to receive such praise, Barry, but the credit should really go to Mother Nature for providing the composition and lighting, and our heroes Wesson, Fletcher-Watson et al for showing us their mastery of tone and mark-making.

Lovely free, impressionistic watercolour David.

I really like the watercolour sky, David, and the distant trees: massed together and yet with varied tones. I'd love to know more about the precise location. My mother grew up on Middlewood Road.

Thank you, Roger. The background trees are done with cobalt blue + burnt sienna, alternately adding a bit more of one colour to the mix every couple of strokes. As for location, if you know the area, the track from Middlewood Road / Anson Road junction across the golf club is to the left of the view, and Round Nursery + Towers Road is to the right.

Thank you for the information, David; that's really interesting. I haven't been back for years so I've had the map out. I see where you mean; in the fields behind the white houses my Mum used to call the miners' cottages.

And yet another Tuesday morning outdoor session when I was able to venture out into the stifling heat and try to capture the feel of a heatwave on my favourite local scenes, usually painted in more typically English weather!

David Whitehead

I have always loved the British landscape – walking in it, photographing it and now, since early retirement, painting it in watercolour. I prefer to paint in the field and have experienced all the difficulties the British weather can present to a painter, from the sun drying the paint on the…
