Absolutely wonderful David. I see by looking at the comments under your other work that you started this some time ago. I'm not surprised it's taken the time it has because the detail is amazing. Yet you've also captured a stillness which emphasises the majesty of the owl. Is this a commissioned piece.

Hi Marjorie. No, at the moment I only paint my owls and raptors as a hobby, I have a full time career, a wife and a 5 year old boy hence time to paint is limited to 'some weekends' at best! I am however looking to sell some limited edition prints with a gallery based in St. Ives Cornwall, soon to open up an additional gallery in Bath. I like to keep my originals, they are all hung on my wall at home. Thanks for the compliment though - being commissioned to paint birds is my dream career!! I like the feeling I get when I paint birds in their natural habitat, I become so engrossed in what I'm painting that it genuinely feels like I'm there - sounds crazy I know, but it's a wonderful feeling. I've now started to paint a Pel's Fishing Owl, and African species, coming on well, but won't be complete until at least December I expect!

Absolutely amazing painting David, I feel as if I could reach out and touch him. You have incredible patience and heaps of talent.....and I hope your dream comes true.

Hi Fiona, thanks for your comment. I guess you never know, dreams do come true for some people out there after all!

This painting is of a Stygian Owl in its natural habitat in the Chicaque Cloud Forest of Colombia. The painting is 59.4x42cm, painted entirely in Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache on Watercolour Board. One of the things I like about this painting is that despite their extensive though patchy distribution from Mexico to Argentina Stygian Owls are a fairly little known species in the birding community and hence a large painting of this bird in its natural habitat is quite unique.
