The last patrol
The date is 3rd June 1945. The setting is over Ballyshannon at the exit of the Donegal corridor.A Short Sunderland of 201 squadron heads of to protect the homeward bound North Atlantic convoys. Later that night the pilot, Wing commander John Barrett DFC would receive a radio message to ‘cease patrol’. He returned to Castle Archdale on Lough Erne landing at 03.21 hours and entered the history books as the last operational patrol flown by Coastal Command in the war.
