Hello Clive, I've been sitting here and watching those lovely onions for at least five minutes. The shine is so real and colours just right but, I hope you don't mind me asking, where are the shadows? I can see the sun shining from the left but I cannot see any shadows. The onions seem to float in the air. There is also a white line around the red onion that should not be there if you want a realistic image. All that is easily mended by reworking the background a little bit. I want you to do well and that is my only reason for this critique. Kind regards, Satu.

I see that your light is almost parallel to the onion unifying the cast shadows. I think it works. Cheers :-)

Hello Satu - I am most flattered that you spent so long looking at this painting!!! It really was just going to be a quick sketch type painting with vigorous brush stokes and rough edges defininig the round forms against the hard shadows. I tightened up the round shapes to improve the actual space between the onions as the painting progressed and so some areas came right first time and others needed to alteration. The shadow is there as Chito has observed, because they were sitting on a blank white board with a shaft of sunlight almost parallel to the horizontal, hence the strange splayed purple shadow - the shadow of the first joining the other two behind. I didn't notice a white line around the red onion and even on second look I feel that there isn't a problem with what is here as the white 'outline' only strengthens the backgrond white. I do think the shadow is unusual though. I have never seen this sort of shadow. The onions are really well drawn. I love onions (not to peel) as they are so varied in texture and colour and this is a lovely little painting in it's simplicity. Carry on Clive!!
