Really beautiful work Charles.

Good for you - I completely agree with you, do it your way. Its a beautiful picture and painted really well with the watercolours. I also struggle with the " got to be luminous, transparent" thing and was thinking of having a go at oils, maybe that's the medium for me? Anyway, you go for it Charles, its a great picture done IN YOUR STYLE and look forward to seeing some more!

Charles -I couldn't agree more with your comments. I too have been learning to paint in watercolours and have yet to find the tranparency! I love this picture which so represents the style of painting I admire.

Very beautiful and rich watercolour.

And long may you continue to paint your style - a style of your own and great it is.

Welcome back to watercolour Charles, i keep trying other media but always come back 'home'. The thing to avoid is the dreaded mud, which you have done, your work is strong but clean - not easy to achieve, well done.

Charles, I think the present insistence on transparency at all costs came as a reaction to the very stilted work of some of the Victorian watercolourists, who painted with excessive amounts of stippling, Chinese white, and very tight work with very small brushes. It then all got a bit silly - rules crept in one after the other, eg don't ever use white, or one of my favourites - "of course, we don't use opaque paints in watercolour": well, that particular writer (forgotten who it was) could speak for herself so far as I'm concerned. Rules, rules, ruddy rules ..... throw 'em all out of the window. And indeed you have: but your work to me DOES have transparency, whether you're painting in watercolour or acrylic, or in the few oils you've shown. You don't get the glowing light, the yellows and greens and red-browns in your paintings, by mixing muddy colour but by knowing what pigments work together. Anyway: you should be writing a book yourself - keep doing it YOUR way.

Nice one Charles, you keep on doing it your way because you produce great results and great paintings!

Good for you. I just wrote in my blog that the OCA course I did kept going on about painting loosely and experimenting and my painting went down the drain. The emphasis on paintings having to be loose and having to be transparent leads people to believe there is no other way or that everything else is wrong. Well there are other ways and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Stick to your guns and paint the way feels right for you. Entitle them "I DID IT MY WAY". This is a terrific painting.

I agree with everyone we all love your style Charles, beautiful watercolour (thank you very much for your very nice comment on my painting).

A wonderfully accomplished style it is too. Well done.

I am so pleased you have said this Charles as I too had a dabble with watercolour but felt I was using it more like acrylic and gave up on it. Maybe I will try and give it another go. Don't give up your style it is beautiful so who cares if its 'correct' or not it certainly works. Another stunner.

Love this Charles. Wonderfully light and atmospheric, with great composition and vibrancy. Apologies for the late comment. I've been away and am now slowly catching up.

I agree with all the above: everyone should keep to his/her own style. Your work (subjects and execution) are so typical for you: keep on going, it is stunning!
