CHARCOAL PAINTING N03

Interesting composition, I love the way the tree on the right sweeps right across the page.

I think this is marvellous, these charcoal paintings are so full of atmosphere.

Another lovely charcoal painting Charles

Another good effort Charles, the tones are not as strong in this one, is that the paper?

Lovely textures, Charles - you may not be happy with hte paper, but it's worked here!

another great charcoal Charles

Wonderfully atmospheric. :)

Well, as I said before, I've never used watercolour paper for charcoal - so I'm not too surprised you're less than happy with the Saunders paper. Even so - it's highly effective. Want your secrets now! Are you lifting the highlights out with putty rubber, or using white crayon to show them? Or - and this would be truly incredible - reserving the whites by just not drawing into them? I've used white conté crayon with black crayon before, which worked pretty well - but this doesn't look like crayon to me.....

Sorry Robert this work was done on Bockingford 250lb not--my mistake-- The Saunders Waterford 140lb not has proved to be the best yet --Secrets:- after I have filled the paper with charcoal I rub it well in with kitchen roll paper untill I get a light grey even surface. -I then lift out whites were ever needed with a putty rubber.- Then its back in with the charcoal-drawing smudging and touches of putty rubber till I get want.--- The distant whites are kept by not drawing into them.- I do them this way because I have not found a better way yet-- Still learning you know--No crayon used in any of the three works

This paper works well with the tree bark though. Very good.

I like this alot Charles ! You are getting very good at charcoal.

I'm starting to hate you, Charles! Every painting you post raises the bar another notch. This is really lovely - there is so much depth and great tonal work in evidence, and the layering is absolutely superb. A wonderful piece indeed! Thank you so very much too for your very kind comment on my painting.

These charcoal pictures are very effective Charles. I like them all. Mucky fingers though?!

I feel the same way as Seok, I must have somehow missed this one had a senior moment I expect !! Neverther less it's another great charcoal painting.
