I worked on a heavily textured board (thick layers of tissue paper glued on then a good coating of PVA glue on top). I didn't really know how he was going to turn out but I quite like the effect of his face emerging from the background. Liminal was the key word. (One more for the wall in my Uni studio - group critiques next week!)
