Paul’s article is excellent, as they usually are, and you’ve achieved a very appealing result by applying the mess-to-finesse strategy. Must try it myself.

A super result Chris!

Thanks James and Fiona. I really enjoyed the exercise looking for the shapes and values and painting with a big flat to block in. Using matt medium as suggested really does help to add transparency. Adding the details at the end really does help to pull the painting together.

A fine result and lovely colours!

Love the style of this Chris.

I rarely use a medium in acrylic, but - probably time I did. I like a good mess, though - landscapes are messy places very often (nearly always) and the wilder they are, less cultivated and clipped, the better.

Had great fun following the article by Paul Talbot-Greaves on acrylic mess to finesse in The Artist magazine March 2025
