I like this Brian, but I'm worried by the lamp post dead centre! Could you not remove one plane tree by cropping the painting? and thus move the centre.Some cast shadows? The scene is lovely - it just needs "finishing".

Thanks Avril, I knew when I took the photo that the lampost was too central and have ignored it as a subject to paint for ages. I have moved it slightly to the right but clearly have not got away with it!!! One for another "stab" when once again struggling for a subject at our Monday art group.

Why not have another go changing the composition. I also forget all too often that we're free to change what we like when painting! Remove the left hand plane tree and put the street lamp and bike in its place- however you might well have had enough with the subject! Happy painting on Monday!

If you don't want to crop one of the trees out you could try darkening them and that should naturally draw your eye to the centre of the page.
