The pohutukawa (metrosideros excelsa) is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree, because it flowers in December. It grows in the warmer northern parts of NZ, the Southern Rata is more common in the southern parts. The species that is endemic to Stewart Island is a groundcover. The image is a free to use photo from the internet. I am not good enough to do this beautiful tree justice and I wanted people to see it at its best. I don't have a photo of my own as I am not aware of it growing in ChCh, although there might be sheltered places where it does.
