This was just a quick sketch done while I was waiting for the tutor to get back. I rather like it and have made three attempts to replicate it on canvas, none of which has satisfied me. I am putting up the third and last attempt with title Last Attempt.

You’re right- this has a spontaneity that the other has maybe lost some of. Perhaps sometimes better when the tutors not around! Maybe this is a sample of what’s in your head rather than what’s put there by your tutor?

Thank-you Tessa for your comment. However I can't blame the tutor for the lack of spontaneity in my various attempts to get a satisfactory rendition on canvas. "Last Attempt" was done pretty well on my own, with just some final advice from the tutor. (She is really very good). I have never managed to do an "improved" version of one of my paintings, and I have tried on several occasions. I think it is because the first attempt is the spontaneous one, however unsatisfactory it turns out.

I like this one Sandra. Caught my eye right away. Lots of character and a nice sense of distance. Keep this one.

Thank-you very much Jim. Yes, I will keep this one.

reminds me of looking towards the Southern Alps from Akaroa ? Eye catching and active. I find that repeating a painting never captures the initial impact and excitement of the first effort - which is why sketching is now the end point for me and not the beginning. Repeating in a different medium can provide sufficient stimulation , I find, to regain some of the initial excitement, but then it is a "different" painting anyway.

I prefer this one Sandra, it has the spontaneity as others have mentioned but also it looks as though you enjoyed doing this one, where perhaps the following attempts you tried too hard to get it exact. I can never get two paintings to look the same, so with that in mind I don’t put myself under pressure. The out come is usually better than I expect in the end! Lol.

Thank-you very much Mike. I didn't have a specific place in mind but it could resemble looking towards the Alps. You're right about trying to repeat a painting. I did try one version in oils, which has turned out a different painting, sort of OK-ish but not really what I wanted.

Thank-you Fiona for your very perceptive comment, I think I was trying too hard with the others, whereas this one just evolved spontaneously. This has happened with other ones too so I think I won't try again to "improve" something

Sandra these are really lovely, love your palette.

Thank-you Carole for your lovely comment.

Acrylic 8x12 inches, acrylic paper. A quick sketch done while I was waiting for my tutor to get back to look at the painting I was doing.

About the Artist
Sandra Kennedy

I became hooked on painting when I joined an evening class on painting "Abstracts in Acrylic" some years ago. Now retired, I was painting fairly regularly until the last couple of years when I've had a "creative drought". This year I'm getting back into painting, concentrating on abstract.
