Great detail Seth. You said in a comment on John Inkson's painting you would love to try oils but don't know how to start. I would recommend Robert Jones's ("our" R J) book "Oil Paint Basics", available as a kindle e-book. It has the most practical basic info on oil painting that I have come across, and would get you started.
