The Holly King reigns from the Summer Solstice to the Winter Solstice. On the longest night of the year (December 21st or 22nd) his reign comes to an end and he battles with his brother the Oak King who deposes him and reigns until the Summer Solstice in June. In this painting he is waiting, during the Solstice night, for the coming of his Oak King brother who will put an end to his reign. You can just see the Oak King approaching in the distance............................. The Holly King was obviously the inspiration for the idea of Father Christmas.
