Very good. Are you an illustrator?

Good morning Margaret. I've done a small amount of illustrating. My eldest daughter wrote a few cartoons and I illustrated them and they were published this year in a soft backed comic book. I also illustrated a friend's book of humourous historical poems, they were just simple black and white fine line drawings. Over the last 4 years most of my art has been paintings (acrylic) as they sell more easily. Perhaps someday I'll get round to that children's book I'd like to write and illustrate. Thank you for your kind words about my People Working series. Yes I do use photographs plus check-ups via pastel quick studies if I can persuade people to give me their time. Five butchers did not have the time so I had to visit their shop Woodfords in Bembridge Isle of Wight. I bought a lot of their meat in consequence! My methods use squaring up as you suggest as well as free sketching. Photographs distort shapes ,colourations and somehow do not do mutch for the fleeting smile!. As time goes by and I improve I am more and more aware of the inadequacies of photographs. I do like your work as it is clear and amusing and very competant in execution and composition. P.S. I love NZ and would visit again. The National gallery in Christchurch could do with some of your work! Regards John R Hunter
