Geisha Master of the Arts is an unaffected portrait study. The artist has placed her subject against a red umbrella which serves as an ideal background for the beautiful young Japanese geisha with her black hair and dark eyes, completing the traditional highly colourful kimono she is wearing with extravagant obi. Obi ( literally "sash"?) is a sash for traditional Japanese dress, keikogi worn for Japanese martial arts, and a part of kimono outfits. Geisha are traditional, female Japanese entertainers whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music and dance. The hairstyles of geisha have varied through history. In the past, it has been common for women to wear their hair down in some periods, but up in others. During the 17th century, women began putting all their hair up again, and it is during this time that the traditional shimada hairstyle, a type of traditional chignon worn by most established geisha, developed. Medium Oil Painting on Canvas Dimensions 15.8inch wide 20inch high (40 cm wide 55 cm high)
