Monoprint 'Black Swans' re-visited by Angela Harrison

Previously I pressed the sheet of glass with gouache painting over the watercolour paper and that was tricky as harder to align. This time I pressed the damp paper over the sheet of glass and the gouache seemed to absorb better. We learn techniques that are more efficient each time with these monoprint images. Actually I did about four sequences of painting over the original image under the sheet of glass and pressed it down on the water paper, but as the gouache dries fast it didn't seem to adhere very well. I decided to alter the process and nearly gave up but by pressing the paper over the sheet of glass it worked better on the fourth sequence. It was like 'shadow play' as there are lighter shades behind the swans head, although the Prussian blue has formed a blueish impression, so with their cygnets I wish them a dappy happy day!

They are going to look good in the exhibition, and very unique.

This is great… always use damp paper for any form of printing, it helps the paint soak in better. I use Fabriano paper when I’m doing my drypoint etchings, I can’t just recall what the name is, but you’ll see it on the website.

Thankyou all for your comments and feedback on this monoprint. I use Mont Marte watercolour pad and yes it needs to be soaked in tepid water before printing. I think it's better to apply the paper over the sheet of glass as it remains adhered and doesn't slide over the paint. The acrylic seemed to print better than the gouache , however the blue overtones kind of highlight ....just experimenting with images and the process!
