'Katarina crocheting' by Angela Harrison

A lovely portrait and what an interesting story

Why thankyou Heather, Katarina crocheted a blanket for my elderly mother that I sent to her in her latter days. The family thought it had been made by machine, but she sat day and night crocheting by hand. These people are 'the salt of the earth' and she was such a brave lady who had some very interesting stories to tell. Glad I managed to paint her portrait and can gift it to her step daughter. She was a woman of faith too and attended the Catholic Church regularly, amazing faith she had and always attended the communion services, she donated her work too, and set an example to recovery from the tyranny in Bosnia during the invasion...she shared her photos too and these Eastern European people lived earnestly and knew how to fen for themselves from a very young age too, amazing lady indeed!

This is wonderful Angela and a nice tribute.

Lovely picture Angela.

Thank you , Denise, Stephen and Russell for your kind comments on this portrait of Katarina. Much appreciated!

This is an arresting portrait. The bright colors of her clothes and background set off the lighter values of the face, bringing it into focus. In my book, this work competes with Gauguin for color choices and character in the face. She's terrific.

Why thankyou Lynne, I started portrait painting a few years ago, first started with pencil sketch then applied watercolour for the pigments,, might launch out again at some point as need to start some Still-life portraiture , better from life drawings rather than photograph images I think... This lady has sadly passed away recently so I appreciate your comments on dear Katarina.

I sketched this Bosnian lady at our Art/Craft group one day when she was crocheting. She had lived a colourful childhood, where she had escaped tyranny. and told me stories of when she escaped on a train to flee from an orphanage. worked as a knitting apprentice and taught herself crocheting. Her nimble and bright persona reveals the way she overcame some rather hard times in life. Only the other day I heard she has passed away. A brave lady, her blankets are certainly a legacy to treasure!
