Andrea for your first attempt at an animal pastel.I think it is great! .You have caught the alert look in the eyes.We have a number of dogs in the family setup hence the interest in your painting happy painting Neville Hayes

This is a great portrait. You have rendered the fur very well. Lovely expression in the eyes too.

If this is your first effort with pastel, can't wait to see what you'll be producing in a few weeks. It's terrific - well done.

Very well done for your first animal pastel, he looks absolutely wonderful :).

Good effort. Yes with pastels it's better to go from dark to light. Sculpt the dog's body and muscles with your darks and get the shadows in then build up the lights. The only thing I would suggest is that maybe finishing it at the ruff and not going down into the body may have worked better; feathering out the ruff so you don't get such a defined edge to it. Well done indeed for a first animal.

I have just come across your gallery and am very impressed with your portraits. Good luck with obtaining commissions - you deserve to do well.

This is my first attempt at an animal (pastels) and I found it quite challenging to do the fur. I wasnt sure whether to go from dark to light or vice versa - is there a best way? All comments most welcome.
