I have an unrealizable ambition to rebuild Corfe Castle - and live in it. It's one of the ruins that Cromwell knocked about a bit - widely revered in some quarters, but not in this one particularly. A bit of blue or purple in the distance is the usual distancing method, that and lighter washes .... but it can look very artificial and contrived when you do that, so I should just continue to paint what you see.

The photograph had hints of both of those distancing factors in it - I just need to control my watercolour better! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Corfe Castle is in such a stuning location, I can see why you feel like that. But I kind of like it in its ruined state, regardless of who made it so (is it Cromwell or ruined castles that you don't revere?) Happily, we are due to return to the vicinity of Corfe for this year's family holiday; as we are likely to be travelling in a bigger car, I am even hoping to take my plein air oil painting gear!

Second of a trio of watercolours made from photographs of last year's holiday in Corfe Castle, Dorset. Dual purpose sketches, they are for both Twitter happening #buildapril (anything goes as long as there's a building) and, pure and simple, for practice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This one, I think, worked rather better, but I'm not entirely happy with the rendering of distance in the hills.
