I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is dreadful. It's just different from the ones you have done lately. The others have had inate drama. This is dramatic in a quieter way. Light is great as usual.

It wasn't that the painting was dreadful, more that the place not being personally sigificant was dreadful. I kind of like the idea that I have a strong sense of place and that it is expressed in the paintings. Can you have a sense of place about a drive-by shooting of the photographic kind?

Actually, I suspect that you can. I drove past Barrow Hill again today (it's not close to home; today was a bit of a road trip) and it was kind of like an old friend. Already. We use that route fairly regularly, but not frequently - maybe three or four times a year - twice that if you count return journeys. But I can't say that I've noticed Barrow Hill before ths year.

Thank you for your kind comments, Gudrun. I like the suggestion that I've been more dramatic, paintwise, of late; I think you're right, but I'm not sure wy that should be.

I agree that it is easier to paint something that you are very familiar with. However, sometimes you might miss something because you are so used to it! This is especially the case if you go on holiday. You won't be familiar with some places at all, but you will still have some kind of connection and emotional feel for it, however briefly, but the detail usually is much more clear ... so a "drive by" is fine! You have been very prolific lately too in addition to the drama.

This is dreadful. It isn't a place that means anything much to me. It's just a random pretty hill by the side of the A303 in Somerset, snapped by yours truly from a moving car (I wasn't driving). I had to look it up on Google Maps. But it is a lovely hill. With nice trees. And New Year's Day had nice weather this year! Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 cm
