I really like your knife oils which are excellent. This one is no exception.

Whether I'd have recognized the teasels had you not identified them, I don't know - but it's a striking painting nonetheless; and you've avoided the big problem with knife painting - that it can seem brash and obvious.

Thank you, Gudrun and Robert - although, Robert, you've got me wondering now if any of my other knife paintings are "brash and obvious"...

Breath again, I don't think they are; but knife paintings can be too .... well, too easy (I'm sure this one wasn't); effects can be too readily achieved, and people don't always finish the painting adequately because the impact of the impasto carries them away.............. More on this in my fascinating e-book, a snip at £8 per download, £10 per dvd: not that I'm one to plug .... I think though that a good painter is, basically, a good painter, whether with brush or knife; knife painting does impart an instant richness, that's all - and there's a tendency - with some - to be satisfied with that. www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk www.isleofwightlandscapes.net

I already am very tempted by your ebook, Robert. Will get around to buying a copy soon :-)

I do think that some of my earlier knife paintings might have fallen into that trap. Take a look at the progression of my depictions of Cannon Heath Down, if you like: http://amanda-bates-artist.blogspot.co.uk/p/cannon-heath-down.html . They're not all good.

Well, I just love this striking painting!

Dipsacus is the genus name of the plants also known as teasels, teazles or teazels. Here, they are growing in a lage puddle or small pool on Greenham Common, upon which the wind has created some nice ripples on the surface. Another small, quick painting. Oil on canvas, 7 x 5"
