I've never really got on with palette knife and I think this is very effective with a texture to the image

Maybe you should give it another go? It's rather fun, and excellent for plein air painting. I use traditional oils, and there is no need for solvents (so no danger of spillage) and no brushes to clean... a quick wipe with a piece of kitchen roll and the knife is good to go. I started using a knife as a sort of self-discipline - to stop myself obsessing over the details - but I love the results (the solid smoothness, and the impasto effect, and the happy accidents that arise from the colour underneath unexpectedly reappearing, half mixed... ). So it's now my default oils method. Does take rather a long time to dry, though.

Lovely landscape Amanda, and sky of course

Lovely portfolio and your advice about palette knife painting, particularly plein air, has me determined to have a go.

Go for it, Fran! I hope to see the results...

Painted from a patch of access land on an opposing slope in March this year (during the unseasonably warm weather). I've made several paintings of this subject - all en plein air, all with a knife - but I think that this is one of the best. There is a page on my blog that collects al of the paintings together: http://amanda-bates-artist.blogspot.co.uk/p/cannon-heath-down.html Oil on canvas, 28 March 2012, 60 x 25 cm
