I *think* this is pastel. It could be chalk, but if so it's a long way from the stuff under the downs. I picked up 5 boxes - one of each colour (two red-browns, one yellow (ochre?), one green and one white) from The Works maybe 10 years ago. I put one stick of each in a box of sketching stuff and hid (put away) the boxes somewhere obscure. There was a bit of charcoal in the sketching box, too, and it got used in this picture, which was done on half of an A4 sheet of some blue card that I found (it looks a bit sugar papery). There was a bit of finger smudge action happening here too. Anyway. Pumpkin and Butternut Squash still haven't been eaten.
