I carry a small sketch book/diary with me especially when on holiday. I keep brief notes of what I am doing where I have been etc and am always doing very quick sketches in - better than any photos - and when I look back at them I can remember in surprising detail everything about the experience. I can see you do something similar and really enjoy doing so as this great little sketch conveys.

Just lovely, like the portcullis.

Lovely details in this sketch Amanda, great to see you moving in new directions as well

i have about 15 small sketch books. filled with memories and lovely times. this is lovely.

Great drawing. I am always in a quandary as to what size sketchbook to have.

A stunning piece. You've captured a lot of atmosphere in it.

Thank you, all. Gudrun, my rule of thumb regarding the size of sketchbook is "the largest that will resonably fit in the bag / pocket available, along with some drawing materials". Thus I have A6 (for general purpose outings that might involve a useful sized bag), A5 (fits in my Derwent pencil bag - for more deliberate drawing expeditions) and A4 (for when I have more capacity and more confidence that there will be an opportunity). After that, there's the plein air *painting* kit which is *very* deliberate. However, today I popped a tiny watercolour set in my bag... hey! It's lunch time now! Time to head out...

A lovely little sketch here Amanda!

I have just started a sketch book and I find I am much more relaxed as there is no pressure to finish the perfect picture Lovely sketch like the touch of colour for the brick work

Great little sketch - nice detail.

A lovely sketch !

I have taken to carrying a small sketching set almost everywhere. This was done yesterday in an A6 casebound sketchbook with carbon and sanguine oil pencils.
