Evolution Time (Sundial at Downe House)
Downe House was Charles Darwin's country retreat, hence the sightly pretentious title. I was considering making a painting of this subject, and used oil pastel to work out the potential extent. But I like this, and I don't think I want to "replace" it with a painted version. I used Sennelier Nature pastels (which is why the dial is red; in reality, it was a delicate blue-green. The natural pigments used in this set don't extend well into the blues and greens), with a scratching-back technique that I think suits the subject quite well. Although it did leave my fingernails begrimed with oily pigment. Approximately 21 x 21 cm. Oil pastel paper.
