When you get a large canvas made, it seems that the only wooden internal frame size is "deep" or ~4cm. (Probably for stability). Now, the person who comissioned this thinks he *will* frame it, but it seemed best to paint the edges anyhow (it's easier to do it now). I found a big bit of floor and applied an ultramarine-burnt-umber grey; then I decided to echo the underpainting dribbles...
