Madonna of the Majorelle Gardens by Alice van Jaarsveld
This touching family moment caught my eye and was begging to be captured with its magnificent background. I began with a strong wash of Quinacridone Rose to infuse the whole picture with a sense of the hot vivid colours of the Majorelle Gardens as well as the desert climate. After sketching in the figures and basic architecture, I set about working on the complex detail of the stucco moulding with Ultramarine and Raw Umbre, roughly drawing the pattern and the shadows. while it was still wet I finished it loosely with highlights of Titanium White with a little Yellow Ochre and Ultramarine. The fIgures were painted in wet on wet and the whole scene called for almost pure pigment, Cobalt Blue and Chrome Yellow which is so much in keeping with the feeling of Jacque Majorelles garden as restored by Yves St Laurent.
