Never heard of liquid pencils but the result looks really lovely and interesting, Adele. Great drawing!

This looks really nice Adele - sounds very technical tho!!

Lovely adele, really lovely.

Is that horse going to bolt out that door Adele? Liquid pencil, what next with they bless us with lol,

I hope it doesn't John. Thanks for the comments Satu, Donna, Gudrun, Russ and John. Liquid pencil, for those who don't know are graphite in liquid form. They come in small pots of rewettable or permanent colour in grey, sepia, red, yellow and blue and can be mixed with water to any density or used neat. Made by Derivan and no, I do not, unfortunately own shares. I had thought about them for about a year and then saw I had a substantial amount of reward points from SAA (obviously I have been buying quite a lot - shh don't tell hubby) - so I decided to put them towards a set.

Excellent drawing Adele and the added colour finishes it off lovely. They sound and interesting medium.

Ooh great work Adele, wondered how this liquid pencil would turn out, do you like using it?

It's a lovely piece Adele.

Super draughtsmanship Adele - great result.

Really lovely, Adele.. super result with those liquid pencils!

Nicely drawn Adele, well done for experimenting.

Thank you Fiona, Carole, Henry, Michael, Heather and Alan. Carole, after I got over the initial shock of them behaving like watercolour, I quite enjoyed it. Best of all is the end result, which you can't really see on this picture. It has a soft and slight "twinkle" to it, which is the graphite part. You can also burnish it as you can with ordinary pencil. One thing I did notice though, is that when I left the colours on my palette at lunchtime, the graphite had dissolved more into the colour and made them darker so you might have to make a fresh batch. Also these colours are not bright, as you can see - more like graphitints. Well worth trying particularly if you like working in graphite.

This is beautiful Adele. I've never heard of liquid pencils but the effect is amazing. Watercolour next, I'm positive you can do it!

Thanks Adele sound interesting .

Will look up liquid pencil having seen this..great.

Thank you Ellen and Peter. Ellen I am like a very reluctant child - dragging my feet.

There's a lot of immediacy to the piece, Adele. You've captured the movement of the rider and the horse beautifully.

A superb piece of work, Adele....statues are not easy things to portray in any medium, and you've done a great job!

This is great Adele, a lovely look on the painting.

Thank you Seok, Chandra and Margaret.

I haven't tried this medium but you have handled it really well.

I've had this photo of a statue from Ainwick Castle, Northumberland for quite some time and decided to try out my pots of liquid pencil. When I added water to them I found that acted very much like watercolours and I had a mini meltdown as me and watercolours have a very uneasy relationship. However, I persisted yesterday and I wasn't too unhappy with the results. The effects, when dry, are lovely as they have that graphite look. Will definitely have another go.

About the Artist
Adele Elgood

When I was a young girl my parents had a large mirror which had an etching of a "crinoline lady" on. I would spend hours copying this. In the 1960's when I was at Secondary school, I was told to give up painting and drawing as I was useless and would never be any good. Following these words of…
