Apologies here, I’ve just been informed that these are clouds, I obviously didn’t read it correctly! Anyway, they’re far too dark and solid, and need a fair degree of softening.
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

I don't think you mis-read anything, Alan - unless  you mean mis-reading the painting rather than the text.  Neither of us saw these shapes as clouds because they are both too dark, and apparently unaffected by the light above them.  I've never seen tropical storm clouds (although the way things are going now, we may all be seeing them before too much longer) but however dark and threatening they may be, they will still show the effect of light upon them; that they largely don't is why we both assumed they were meant to be trees. I don't think this would be hard to correct, though.
