Here's the other painting, which has many of the same problems as the first one, plus a few all its own - I really don't like this one at all, but it would be interesting to read what you think of it.
Similar scenario again as you’ve already identified yourself Robert. The eye is clearly drawn immediately to the coloured beach huts/sheds, drawing the eye away from the main composition - which has a lot of horizontal planes. No obvious lead in (perspective) to the scene!
My thoughts exactly!
OK - well, the second one is a weak painting, and I remember getting bored with it at the time, which is why I resorted to gouache.  There are too many barriers in it, no real way in - and I'd have to re-invent the scene entirely.  Besides which - I am just bored with the scene.  So - I might try working on the first one: by zooming out - hmmmm.  Should I bother....?  There's SOMETHING there - the odd angle of the steps down to the water; the boat house intruding on the path; but the fact is that the details of an Isle of Wight beach scene just aren't that interesting to me - I've seen them all too often, and most of them are oddly similar: could I improve this composition by moving out of it, making the colours more 'natural' ..... I still don't know....  Possibly, if in doubt  - try something else.  Too many of the scenes available to me are very 'domestic', and thus, a touch tedious: seek more natural subjects, perhaps - not the conservative architecture of the average beach and protective sea defences......
I must admit Robert I have seen a fair amount of your paintings and enjoyed them..  this one would not rank amongst my favourites.  Maybe crop it to the beach huts ?  Or just abandon it...life is sometimes too short.   You can get over absorbed  by too familiar scenes yours being coastal mine rural .   Yesterday I did go to a localish beach about nine miles away and it was a delight to have big horizons , though as I was busy playing throw the ball for Sam ,painting / drawing was not an option.  Sometimes I close in on a very tiny bit like water, stones, plants... oh go and draw a few more rattys .
Stop obsessing, in short!  Yes.  You're right.
The middle distance tones are the same as the foreground. Lighten the middle or darken the foreground. I like the huts as they are, a lovely focal point. You have a nice L shaped composition of interest on the left, and quiet passages on the right, for us to linger a while.
You can never know you have painted a good picture until you have painted a bad one.
I have folders full of the latter.
Doubt it CJ.
Wish I could be as optimistic as you, Sylvia, if I ever get to come North, again, we'll have a folder fest over a coffee, or maybe something a bit stronger.
The wee bit stronger sounds good... look forward to it . 🐕
