The Vermilion Palace, JMW Turner
Sometimes, I do find his watercolour sketches indistinguishable (on a screen) from his more fluid oil sketches. Rose Madder and Carmine are both fugitive, at least in their original formulations - vermilion, well, that depends on what's in it.  It's remarkable that so many of Turner's paintings have retained the colour they have.
For me personally, my favourite works by Turner are his watercolour sketches such as the examples above. That’s not to take anything away from his exceptional oil paintings of course!
