Sylvia, initially I mixed shades of grey using black and white for the grisaille. I think what you can see when I first started is the colour I primed the canvas with. Once this had dried, I began with the glazes.
Just found a site with a great explain...interesting.  Ta ....  
Good Sylvia, you can use a grisaille just as is, as a tonal painting or use it as an underpainting, which is what I have used it for here. I am still learning a lot about it myself, this is why I like to practice these things and get a feel for the process. I hope to do many more using this method and get much better as I go along but this is only my second piece using this process. It is an old method of painting and I think that's why I like it so much.
I find attitudes to painting methods interesting.  We all go about things quite differently.   I tend to leap in there and just go for it and make it up as I go along.     I have been to demos with artists who's work I greatly admire but ten minutes in and I'm itching to get away.   Basics like colour mixing I find out by trial and error .   Each to their own.
I must be a bit between the two of you. I’ve used the grisaille method before, it’s interesting what emerges with the glazes but now I like “ immediacy”. I like to complete a painting quickly, I get bored with a long process. I find that if I spend too long I lose the excitement and tend to fiddle. Yes, we are all different. 
I also like both Marjorie. I do a variety of other stuff alongside this. I don't lose focus or get bored using this long process. Maybe, if I was only doing this, I might.
A quick update on this. It's just not working out. I think it's had six glazes on the face and I've started building up textures in the hair and clothing. I'll probably spend another week on it, tightening up the details on the face and working on the textures. I figured out some of my mistakes and some will need a bit more consideration. I'll keep cracking on, even though I'm not happy because it's never a waste of time. It all adds to practice and gaining experience of these techniques. So, another week, then I'll call it.
I do appreciate the amount of patience you putting into it, as you've said it's well worth it because even though we aren't 100% satisfied - we still getting experience 😊 Personally I like this painting very much 😊  Art.
Taking time to work it through is why you are such a good artist and how you have developed your skills so well. 
Where do you think you're having trouble?  We all do hit problems - especially with something we've not done before: I'm having more than my share with pen and ink - but the biggest issue I have right now is thinking of what to paint: not so many technical answers to that one. I can see a few issues with your portrait, but won't pick them out because that might distract you from the particular issue you're having.  But if we can help - do not hesitate to ask - I don't always want to; there's much to be said for just working at things on our own, if we can see the problem.  It can be much more difficult when you know something is wrong, but - don't know what. 
Appreciated Art and Paul. Robert, it looks blocky in parts and I've gone to dark in some areas. I'm having a good think about it. I'm going to continue working on the hair and clothes then come back to the face.
I think it's looking good, just a little lightening/blending of the shadows will even it out...but I'm just an amateur.
