I stared reading a book a few weeks ago about British Rainforests, yes we do have then we’ll we do have the rain to make them qualify . The book is absolutely brilliant and has some excellent examples of Dartmoor and Scottish Atlantic rain forests or rather temperate rainforests. Lots of the trees are very old oks etc cover in lichen, moss and many other plants that live on them . Whist looking at photos on line I decided I would love to have a go at painting a scene in one of these woodlands. So here we are possible doomed to make a mess and a fool of myself publicly, won’t be the first time I hear seriously they are so complex it could go wrong due to all the different greens . I want to paint it not because I think it would be a great landscape it because off the different hues etc something I really struggle with when doing landscape .
Here is the basic sketch, I need to do one quite detailed due to the overlapping branch’s and the large amount of rocks in the understory.

A bit more detailing added , I used a couple of very small fine sea sponges to get the moss effects. Slightly damp sponge dipped in sap green and lemon yellow and gently touch the paper , over the strong lemon green undercoat press too hard and it’s a green yellow splurge without the stippling.

Paul (Dixie) Dean on 03/02/2023 18:55:53You did surprise me a lot Paul, as I've had not a clue there's any forest around to qualify as a rain forest?! Scottland area & rain forest, whether temporary or not - WOW! I'm interested of how you will paint this interesting subject Paul.
