I stared reading a book a few weeks ago about British Rainforests, yes we do have then we’ll we do have the rain to make them qualify . The book is absolutely brilliant and has some excellent examples of Dartmoor and Scottish Atlantic rain forests or rather temperate rainforests. Lots of the trees are very old oks etc cover in lichen, moss and many other plants that live on them . Whist looking at photos on line I decided I would love to have a go at painting a scene in one of these woodlands. So here we are possible doomed to make a mess and a fool of myself publicly, won’t be the first time I hear seriously they are so complex it could go wrong due to all the different greens . I want to paint it not because I think it would be a great landscape it because off the different hues etc something I really struggle with when doing landscape .  Here is the basic sketch, I need to do one quite detailed due to the overlapping branch’s and the large amount of rocks in the understory.
This is a good example of “ having a go”. Too many people won’t get out of their comfort zone.
A bit more detailing added , I used  a couple of very small fine sea sponges to get the moss effects. Slightly damp sponge dipped in sap green and lemon yellow and gently touch the paper , over the strong lemon green undercoat press too hard and it’s a green yellow splurge without the stippling.
Thank you Marjorie I do think it’s a good idea every so often to stretch yourself or we never develop as artists. I must admit to been very nervous particularly as I decided to do it publicly, the pressure to get it  right helps.
Lovely lovely shapes.  We have a rainforest here in Wales in Gwynedd  ( that's the wet bit) Was that not in your book Paul? As you say the lichens are wonderful.
Yes the book covers the whole of the uk lots of small fragments lay scattered mostly along the western side of Britain due to the the rai from the Atlantic.
Rain forests in the UK?  You learn something every day.  I'm liking your painting Dixie.  I keep reading about mark making with sponges but have never tried it...this technique seems to be working very well for you.
These old moss-covered trees and stone walls are quite magical to look at, this is lovely Dixie. I'll be trying your sponge method on an old wall painting.

You did surprise me a lot Paul, as I've had not a clue there's any forest around to qualify as a rain forest?! Scottland area & rain forest, whether temporary or not - WOW! I'm interested of how you will paint this interesting subject Paul.

The bits that actually survive have been around for hundreds of years Art . The west coast of England, Wales and Scotland ate where they still hang on some ate actually still expanding but very slowly, unfortunately climate change may put a end to that but nature has a way of its own .
I haven’t started to paint today but decided to take another photo as the light is much better today.  First one was taking yesterday second today for some reason they have changed places todays is the top one.
About twenty miles from me.
