Wow Linda it’s superb and beautifully drawn.
Top notch work Linda.  You have the look which is the all important part, I look forward to the finished drawing.
This is looking really good Linda, and I can see why you chose the photo. It’s a lovely face and pose. What size are you doing?
Thanks Paul, Lewis and Tessa.   I’m working on A3 smooth cartridge paper.  I was aiming at doing the whole thing on A4, but my I-pad has a mind of its own and decided to enlarge the reference picture.  So I’m using the enlarged scale, whatever that might be.  The A3 gives me some scope to vary the final position on the page. I must say I’m getting bored with the knitting pattern on the jumper.  Anyone got any tip about doing the texture on the wall?
I'd keep the wall light and simple with just a suggestion of texture - like a vignette. Concentrate detail on the figure.
Colin is right! I would concentrate on the kid himself and a suggestion of the background.
I think I will be taking up your good advice and great a vignette effect, which would be in keeping with the period.  I realise now why I don’t do this kind of think very often, too much like hard work and gets boring after a while.  However here is today’s progress.
Really looking good Linda, such a thoughtful young face.
It beautifully done Linda , I like it as it is now, it has a vignette look to it already sort of fading out rather than finished.
I'm with Paul Linda it looks great just the way it is. Put down the pencil and step away...
It's astonishingly good and needs no more work.
Excellent Linda, some lovely subtle passages in this drawing!
