I may well try that Fiona. Robert, you do bring a smile to my face, I don't think when I join the eternal choir, I will be worrying about my paint darkening, I don't think they will have that big of an audience, looking at them, for me to worry. I am glad your book has arrived, this means mine will be here soon. I really hope your pain settles also, so you can get some painting done.
Fiona and Denise, t think you have both done fantastic jobs, especially as it's your first oil Denise. I have never attempted a snow scene in oils, but you have given me the inspiration to give it a go, and Robert I sympathize with your back problems, I know how you feel, my back keeps playing me up at the moment, sometimes I can't get comfortable enough to paint, old age 😟
I didn't plan on trying oils just yet Linda, I didn't feel I was ready to take a step in that direction, it was when I was reading through Alan's demo, I thought, just give it a go, so that's what I did. I'm really happy I tried it and so looking forward to doing some practice with oils. I made the right decision to try.
I looked at Caravaggio Alan, he was quite the rebel wasn't he. His work knocked me over flat. Just incredible. I can't believe everyone doesn't want to try and paint like that. Not that I'm skilled enough, if I could even paint one object that looked reasonable, it would make me very happy. I think I will be spending a bit more time over the next few months reading about this technique and about the artist himself. Just amazing.
I started this earlier on to experiment and get some practice. I haven't been waiting for anything to dry and I'm not following anything. It's just a bit of a play around really. I'm going to finish it over the next couple of hours I hope. Any thoughts, good or bad appreciated or any advice as if I like it, I might spend time doing a proper one a bit larger. I intend doing another flower and maybe trying a vase.
Your painting has the wow factor, the unopened rose is wonderful and pops out. I hope you will keep the deep contrasts between light and dark. So far so good. . .
Thanks C Jones, I managed to finish it and post it on the gallery. I haven't done a rose before, I wasn't concentrating on the detail of the subject. I was trying to see if I could get the effect I was looking for. I think I managed to capture what I wanted in this practice. I will now study a rose in detail and maybe do a much larger painting of a similar sort.
Capturing the essence of the subject, the individual shape, which, I think, gives it movement is more important than a realistic portrayal. Then again both can be done within the same piece of work. You've made a great start.
I'll be honest, D, I thought the open flowers were carnations, but I liked them anyway. I looked at the finished piece first before I saw this post and I was intrigued that you did the flowers before the glass. I'm pretty sure if I had tried to do it that way I would have got the glass in completely the wrong place so that's really interesting to me. Could you explain why you composed the elements in the order you did? This isn't a crit, I have no clue and I need to know. Thanks.
Hi Andrew, I have never be shown and have been teaching myself so there is no rhyme or reason as to, what point I will make a start on a painting. For me, the vase would have been in the way and would have taken my focus away from what I was trying to achieve. Which was, making something pop from the black background. Sometimes I will start with the main object but sometimes I might start with a line in the corner with something that isn't terribly important to the overall picture. Hope this has answered your question.
Also Andrew, I go with gut feeling.
Thank you Denise. You've given me food for thought.
