I have been meaning to start this picture for a long time.  I am using pastel pencils, pan pastels and soft pastels. Lots of detail so sharpening the pencils regularly which is a challenge in itself. Been chipping away at the harness trying to get the straps in the right place. then gradually filling in the horses bodies.

This is looking so goodJame I’m looking forwards to seeing it develop. I don’t use pastel very often so it will be a learning experience for me m. Would be good if you could explain why you did something a certain way and what your thoughts were.

Paul  (Dixie) Dean on 06/02/2021 12:49:49 Yes of course Paul, I decided to start with the harness being so small and fiddly, if I had started with the body area it would tend to smudge. When I draw dogs I usually get the collar in before doing the rest of the body.   I am working on the fine detail on the harness at the moment, tiny buckles and straps.  Any parts of the body in between the finished harness or straps I will then fill in.  Years ago I would work from left to right at an angle but as the years have gone by and I found glassine paper to lean on I can work where I like.

It’s a great start, the detail is exceptional. This isn’t a criticism by any means, but I can’t understand why you don’t sketch out the whole animal in its entirety, making sure that all your proportions are correct!

I usually draw it out with white pastel pencil. as on the earlier stages. thats how I work, I used to use a pencil to sketch out , but then had to erase the pencil marks out as I  found that the pastel pencils  didn't cover the lead marks.  I just need the basic shape nose, eyes ears and chin marks then fill in the details. they will all be my roadmap.   Hope I have answered your question.

just got the legs and mane ribbons to do. Then put it away for a while before I re-assess it to see what tweeks it might need.
