Good luck, Linda - do you know any other artists who might have tried a project like this?  Even searching on YouTube might yield something, or Googling "painting life-size" - these things can often lead on to incidental sites that might have some answers.  I'll certainly let you know if I can find anything. A thing to bear in mind with David Hockney - he always had, and these days has still more, help with his projects: not painting them, but handling the big canvases, transporting and framing them.  If you have a local art college, or Sixth Form or Tech College with an art department, you never know - they might be looking for, or awake to the idea of, collaborating with a project like this.  It's not, to be honest, one I'd ever try now - but if I did, I'd be looking for willing co-conspirators.  Got to say, I think it's unlikely - but you never know what might turn up if you try.
This may take you quite a while, Linda. We'll be here, waiting and wanting to see and read the outcome. Good luck with it all, you brave lady.

I don't know the gentleman concerned, but I really like the sound of your concept Linda, stepping out of the frame, breaking through barriers.
My next plan is to get the door on the easel and at least use it to support some wallpaper to do an initial drawing on.  I can then carbon copy the drawing onto whatever surface I choose.  The drawing will determine what size I’m going for, but as I am only 5 ft 2”, painting a 6’6” door seems a Bit daunting.

I have a vision now of you waddling across  your studio floor with a door - which rhymes! - and blundering into the easel in a whirl of limbs and totally resistant objects... I imagine barked shins, scraped fingers, bruises in places you didn't realize you had, and a certain amount of Language.. To resurrect Sergeant Wilson - "Is this wise?"
Oh Robert!  Nail on head!  No it isn’t wise, but what has wisdom got to do with it!  Inspiration and passion is what it is all about.  Waddling?  More like wading earlier in the year, when my studio/conservatory was flooded!  There have been lots of hold ups this year - Injury, leaking roofs, illness, holidays, insurance claims, house visitors….  I haven’t been able to use the studio for about a year, not only because of the flooding, but. Hubby has been using it for storage, whilst he reorganises the garage and empties the loft.  So it will be great to get back to oil painting.
I can’t help thinking that using a door for a support just doesn’t sit right with me! It’s unconventional, but that’s not my issue… primarily, it’s the weight issue, doors are heavy, followed closely by future transportation problems… I’m sure that with some research, I could find some cheaper canvas than £300 (I think that’s what was stated), and a couple of sets of stretchers. Definitely, for me anyway if I were undertaking this project (I nearly said challenge), I’d split it into two more manageable portions… worked for Hockney, so good enough for me! I’d feel much more confident working on a canvas support, it’s what I know best…

It’s for 3 canvases but you could put two together, which would give you a 4x6ft area… Plus a spare canvas! It sounds like an exciting project Linda. I hope you post it as a WIP so we can see the ups and downs of working big and how you overcome any hiccups. It will be a learning curve and something really great to work on. Looking forward to it. Good luck with the whole thing. You can do it.
That price sounds a lot better Alan.  Thanks for looking.  I’ve had my first go at scaling up onto my wall paper, but I don’t think it is big enough. Two halves 22” square each making 44” long.  A bit “mini-me” in my view.  But here is half of it.
Linda, I’m looking at it objectively…you’ve got the angle of the eyes and mouth too steep .it’s tricky when you make a start, I know from personal experience.
Many Thanks Marjorie.  You are right, but I’m not to bothered about likeness at this stage, it’s more about how the body sits in the frame and the scale.  Me thinks this one is for the bin.
