I’ve put this in WIP as I’m not sure where else to put it, polite answers only.
I have over the past five or six months started to photograph my paintings in stages of producing them. I use my iPad and use the photo edit facility to look at what they look like lighter or darker. I’ve found this to be useful on several occasions when unsure of the tone etc. I have included the stages I have reached so far and will post a couple more before the final painting. Please comment as you wish, as I find chatting about it help with the development, and brings different ideas.

Broadly agree with Linda - though wonder if the balancing element needs to be the same red as that on the big red boat; I don't actually know the answer to that! But if you have a play on your Ipad, it might help you decide ... something you can do with oil paint and acrylic, not so easy with watercolour, is to just lay a colour down and find out; but here's where modern technology can come to a watercolourist's aid.

Thanks to you both for your comments. I was planning on using the same read on the bottom hull line of the small boat on the right as the large barge. I noticed when I change the barge to nearest it actually is, this I had lost the balance, and thought the colour would add it back a little, well that’s the theory anyway.
