I posted a rough sketch on the forum and decided to develop it into a painting . The original sketch and idea , inspired by a very old faded photo of a sailing barge being assisted by a steam tug . Originally steam tugs were developed to assist sailing ships into harbour when there was no wind or it was blowing in the wrong direction. Because of the unreliability of the old steam engines and the amount of coal needed they were though unstable for long journeys , sailing ships would do the long hauls . I thought this barge was being assisted due to lack of wind , but after studying the photos carefully I realised it was flying two black balls one above the other . I remember reading about it , this I’d a distress signal telling other ships, I have lost Control and cannot manoeuvre, usually happens when lost of engine power or steering.  The original sketch. Sketch for the painting . Some base colours added  Moving on a stage .
Bring this up to date as I have almost finished it, started last Sunday and done bits off and on as I’ve had the time .
If this subject is what excites you to take pencil and paint to paper, that's all that matters, Dixie, as always lovely bright work, and an interesting view of times-gone-by.
I get pleasure from painting lots of different things but I do have a passion for old boats. Bring up to date a bit more as I had another half hour working on this , late afternoon.
Looking good Paul !
Thank you George, I think it’s about done , will leave at an hour or two , but I’m at risk of fiddling with it. Not sure about the look of the sea , but will leave it til I re visit.
Complete, will post it on the gallery.
Beautifully done Paul and interesting to see how it developed. Also interesting seeing a portion of your studio. Will now hop onto the Gallery and leave a comment.
An exceptional piece of work Paul…well done!
omg Paul, this is AMAZING! I love all of this masterpiece!
Thank You Sandra ,Alan and Tanja for your very kind comments.
That's really good Paul, you can almost see the boats rising and falling with the swell.
