After a few week of not being able to paint due to the heat, surgery on my left hand and injections in the right hand I’ve finally put my brain into gear and told myself to stop faffing around and get on with something .
Taking a risk with this one as it’s on Tessa's patch and she know it well , she posted a fabulous paint of the same building a few days ago , at the time I was sketching this one out .
I just love the whole area around the Slaughters , such beautiful villages, and landscapes . I think this build has now changed from a tea room and shop , it was something I read a while ago but hopefully Tessa can update us on that.
My next stage is to put in very light base colours, I find it easier to work when I have the buildings etc clearly visible rather than just the pencil line , the colours are week versions of what is to follow . I have of course done my usual photo shots and changed to to mono colour so I can get an ideas of the contrast etc, the step back photo help to look at the composition as if it was on the wall .

It’s still extremely hot here and the paint is drying very quickly, just looked at the temperature in the shade behind my studio, it’s reading 28 degrees.

Wow Dixie, that’s looking really good! It’s so interesting to see someone else tackling a scene I’ve spent a few weeks working on, and in a different medium. I think you’ve got the water wheel better than I did.
Mine seemed to take forever. I was trying out the new ACF canvas , not sure what I think of it yet, I have another to try, very different to the boards I have been using recently.
The mill, shop and cafe have been closed for ages. I’m thinking a year at least. There is a sign in the window to say that they are renovating but to be honest I haven’t seen any sign of work going on there and I pass it regularly. There is a mobile coffee and snack van outside instead.
Hope your hands are getting easier to work with, and you will see improvement in them soon.
Incidentally Frank B also commented on my painting and he has also done a sketch with a view to painting this scene. It’s a popular place.

Thanks Tessa , yes my hand is definitely improving, the injection in the right hand is a temporary fix till they operate in a months or so when the left is fully healed. I did read that Frank had taken some photos to do a painting. It’s moved on a bit this afternoon since o posted the above work again just base colours.

I’ve done a little bit more this morning, and realised I haven’t made the small building between the mill, and cottage tall enough. In reality you Candy see very much of the upper part of the building to the rear , won’t fiddle now and will use artistic license and add some windows on the rear building. Need to pay more attention when I’m setting up the basic , sketch , will finish off the tree next session .
