Started this painting earlier today , as always a basic sketch on A3 loose canvas a relatively new support for me . I like the effect the linen canvas has on the paint it flows over the rough surface  into the tiny gaps at first and there is little control once it’s dried you can build up layers a bit like oils but very different.  It doesn’t carry thin weak washes very well so it’s a case of thicker bolder brush strokes . The scene is made up but I have researched the buildings etc, it’s set on the bend of at tidal river at low tide. It could be one of the many that were quite common in the Victorian era the barges transported lots of many local made good and produce to the bigger towns and City’s . Often they brought back the luxury and everyday items that people wanted and needed , the building and opening of the railways brought it to an end.
oh i am looking forward to the step by step results - it already looks very interesting and promising! 👀
I like the composition with the boats facing towards the viewer, it works well. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop.
Thank you Tanja and Peter , I’m hoping it works out well it’s very different painting on the canvas than on watercolour paper.  What I want is a working environment that looks used not spotless so some grimy bits here and there and worn out paint etc.  I have done a little bit today but Saturdays are busy with other things going on. I do like or am beginning to like how the paint flows on the canvas and blends it rounds down and across the weave the causes little pools.  I have done my usual thing of showing a close photo and a more distant one , I use the photos to see how it’s coming along it’s a very different view than sitting in front of it . I do look at the painting from different angles and light as I think this helps to spot any bits you want to develop or remove.

Sorry if I've missed something  Paul, is the support you are using here a linen canvas or a paper textured as a canvas, and are you using watercolour paints? Whatever you are using it is working well. I really like the painting so far and look forward to seeing it progress.
Hi George , the support is loose A3 linen canvas . I bought three pads of twenty sheets a few months ago and had done a few A4 paintings but decided to use the canvas for this painting. I’m using bulk standard watercolour paint thst I use all the time , the canvas is pre treated so you can paint straight onto it without any further preparation. It’s new to me and I am really enjoying using it. Thank you for you kind comment about how it looking so far .
It looks as if it's working very well Paul.
Thank Denise.
I’ve just read this from your beginning sketch Dixie, looking really promising. I like the fact that it’s an imaginary scene, not from a direct photo, and you obviously have the knowledge of the old style buildings and boats, which you paint with great confidence. Look forward to seeing the next stage.
Note the cup clearly labelled Paint Water - is the other one labelled Tea?  It's a confusion many of us have made in the past....
I’ve done that so many time and dipped the brush in my coffee etc. My son and his partner who also paints bought the set for me the other says not painting water , it for washing off the brushes in between colours unfortunately I still did into the wrong one. I’ve often though how did I get that colour and it’s either tea of coffee but in sure everyone has done the same thing, I do have a very nice glass that has clearly marked Run only and a link to indicate a very generous amount.
Thank you Tessa I’m hoping to get some more done this afternoon, life has the habit of getting in the way of painting unfortunately.
