I agree , don’t start again, definitely darken under the body as this will make the colours stand out more. It looks really good now with the recommendation changes it will be very good.
Agree (very much) with the others; just strengthen the shadow under the critter - that'll have the effect of making him stand out, and also marginally lightening the other areas of grey.

Don’t abandon Jaffa! Agree with everyone else!
Thank you so much everyone, your expert advice has been taken on board and I hope to post a much improved version soon
So I have darkened the shadow area and lifted the grey slightly.  I think this looks better. This has been a steep learning curve, trying a new medium and a tricky subject.  Hopefully my grandson will be pleased.
He should be pleased! That works much better doesn’t it? Very effective.
Loads better! The dark shadow immediately below Jaffa lift him off the slate perfectly.
Agree, that extra shadow has brought it alive, looks good.
Looks really good, nice when it come together. I like how you have dealt with the foreground, it would have detracted from the main focus had it been in detail.
That looks great now Hillary, your dragon was very precisely drawn to start with and beautifully painted, and now with the darker shadows and softening the edges has given the bark extra lift without giving too much detail to distract from your main subject. I think you have used the inkbrush perfectly, good job well done!!
Thank you so much everyone, I definitely couldn’t have done it without your help, advice and encouragement, it would have ended up in the bin!
