I'm about to embark on a painting inspired by my recent trip to Antarctica, but I have never painted a snowy scene before. I'm also hoping to do it in watercolour, which scares me. I asked my tutor and she suggested using extra gum arabic for the watery bits. I don't really know where to start with this - has anyone got any good tips, for the project. All options considered including changing media. Many thanks Linda Wilson
Why get scared Linda, get some scrap watercolour paper first and splash some paint around and you will soon see how easy it is. You don't need gum arabic and this scene is perfect for watercolour so why not try a wet in wet technique using just two of three colours, go on, just go for it and enjoy the whole experience of watercolour. Don't forget to show us your results.
I would be tempted to try an abstract for this - even if just to "warm up" - the shapes are so interesting and the colours could be very subtle in their changes.
I think you are right Alan and Marjorie - a trial effort is probably the best bet. Although I only need 2 colours - it actually quite complex. I've also been overawed by the recent mountainous painting in the Gallery from our Ukrainian friend.
I like the scene very much .I would simplify it off course ,,the sky first and use the blue as the lightest tonal value for the other blues it would be nice to try it ,
The sky is in, but not blue enough, so I will give it another go. Thanks Syd, Sylvia and Alan.
Hi Splosh. That snow just has to be mainly pure white paper accentuated by the blues? Antartica, how wonderful, bet it was amazing.
Thanks Ruth - Yes it was amazing - but ffffrrrrrrreeeeeesing!
I'm not sure about the pink, but here it is. Comments welcome, positive or negative.
I like the pink Splosh, you have made it your own, it's a very lovely painting.
Thank you Margaret and Syd. I will leave it alone then, and resist the temptation to put a penguin on the "bergybit".
here is my image of snow and ice abstract
